Excavation & Site Prep

Excavation & Site Prep done right the first time

Every concrete job that lasts starts with dirt work done right. If the ground is not dug to the right depth, compacted and graded to drain, even good concrete will crack, settle or hold water. Southern Oregon sites bring their own challenges: expansive clay in parts of the valley that turns to mud in a wet winter, decomposed granite on the hillsides that drains well but washes out when it is not compacted, oak and pine roots, and long rural driveways, shop pads and RV pads that need real grading before a pour.

Rogue Valley Concrete Pro does its own excavation and site prep, so the crew that pours your concrete also gets the ground ready for it. We dig footings and foundations, cut and fill building pads, grade yards so water runs away from the house, and spread and compact the gravel base. Our new driveway and patio pours go down on compacted gravel with rebar grids set on top, and customers mention a spa slab built on a compacted crushed-rock base. When a broken water main needed digging out, we excavated it and replaced the concrete.

How it works

How an excavation job works

  1. 1

    Free on-site estimate

We walk the site and look at slope, soil, access and where the water goes.

Customer reviews

What our customers say

  • “I had a very good experience with Concrete Coating recently. They came by and gave me an estimate on digging out a 3 x 3 area piece of concrete. Turned out that was not where the leak was and they had to come back two more times to dig and another time to replace the concrete. They were very good about staying in touch with me and being available to do each piece of the job I give them five stars.”

  • “I hired Concrete Coating Enterprises LLC to do extensive concrete work on my family’s historic 1920s log cabin, and I couldn’t be happier with my experience! The cabin had significant cracks and issues with its original concrete floors. They removed the damaged sections, properly prepared the foundation, and poured new concrete in the kitchen and dining areas. They also created beautiful custom brick landings, curved steps, and charcoal-colored concrete walkways incorporating original natural stones from our family property. Their attention to detail and craftsmanship are outstanding! What I appreciated just as much as the quality of their work was their excellent communication, reliability, and professionalism. They showed up when expected, kept me informed throughout the project, listened to my ideas, and worked with me to achieve the look I wanted. Renovating a cabin over 100 years old comes with unexpected challenges, and they handled the work with care, patience, and pride.”

  • “I had collected about three or four different estimates and Tim's price was lowest. I determined to see why it was lowest and see if I could endure that. Instead, what I discovered is Tim's job was way more than anybody else was offering instead of setting a 6 inch beam in my Spa slab. He said a 12 inch beam and he increased the rebar to half inch. But it really impressed me was another job he did for me on the sidewalk where the same as with the spa he used 4 inches of crushed rock compacted before he lay his forms out and then instead of using wire he actually use rebar. Basically he's an old-fashioned guy working in today's times where his work is more important than his profits.”

  • “We hired Tim to extend our pool deck and resurface our existing pool deck. Tim is reliable and is very knowledgeable. If you are looking for a concrete guy, Tim is your man.”

  • “Tim was undoubtedly our best choice for a concrete floor on which to build a shed/storage building. They not only arrived on time and as promised, but their staff was always very friendly, helpful, and courteous. Best of all, they did an exceptional job. In the end, the concrete floor turned out even better than we expected, and they also left our backyard spotless after packing up all their tools. We would definitely hire Concrete Coating Enterprises again and highly recommend them.”

  • “This company is very professional and finished the job quickly. Tim is honest and knowledgeable as he addressed any questions in a timely manner. He even came back a couple days after the concrete hardened and pressure washed both areas at no cost. Thank you!”

Questions

Excavation & Site Prep FAQs

What makes site prep in Southern Oregon different?

Soil and seasons. Expansive clay in parts of the Rogue Valley holds water through wet winters and cracks in dry summers, so we time digs around the weather and never pour on soft, wet ground. Hillside decomposed granite drains well but has to be compacted in layers, and oak and pine roots in the work area come out before the base goes in.

How much does excavation and site prep cost?

It depends on how much dirt moves, if it stays on site or gets hauled off, how much gravel base the job needs and how easy the site is to reach. Grading for a backyard patio is a very different job from cutting a shop pad into a hillside. We give you a free estimate after walking the site.

How long does site prep take?

A patio or driveway base can be quick, while shop pads, long rural driveways and hillside cuts take longer. Winter rain is the big variable, because wet clay has to dry before it will compact. We give you a realistic schedule up front, and customers mention that we show up and finish on time.

Do you only dig for your own concrete jobs?

Most of our dirt work is prep for the concrete we pour, which keeps one crew responsible for the whole job. We also take on grading, drainage and pad work on its own for homeowners and builders.

Can you fix a yard that holds water?

Usually, yes. Most standing water comes down to grade and irrigation runoff, so we reshape the yard to slope away from the house and give the water a path out with a swale or drain pipe. If new concrete is going in, fixing the grade first is the best time to do it.
